Description

Bernard Moreau is a very dedicated grower in Chassagne who owns an impressive array of vineyards. He aims to produce wines with excellent purity of fruit and concentration at his 10 hectare estate. The Moreau family has held vineyards here since 1809. Current owner Bernard Moreau formed the present estate in 1977. The vines are old, yields are kept low and annual production only amounts to around 8000 cases. This wine comes from Pinot Noir vines planted between 1960-1965. Chassagne-Montrachet was made an AOC for white wine in 1970. Strangely, the regulations also allowed red wine, but red wine has always been of miniscule importance in the village's history. However, Moreau produces more red Chassagne than white. Moreau recently installed a new bladder press for better extraction of fruit and aromas, giving the wines both more intensity and finesse. After pressing, the wine runs, by means of gravity, into oak casks in the barrel cellar below the cuverie. In the words of Pierre Rovani (Wine Advocate #123) Moreau produces “plump, opulent, and delicious” wines.
